Berlin Stories by Christopher Isherwood A classic of 20th-century fiction, The Berlin Stories inspired the Broadway musical and Oscar-winning film Cabaret. First published in the 1930s, The Berlin Stories contains two astonishing related novels, The Last of Mr. Norris and Goodbye to Berlin, which are recognized today as classics of modern fiction. Isherwood magnificently captures 1931 Berlin: charming, with its avenues and cafés; marvelously grotesque, with its nightlife and dreamers; dangerous, with its vice and intrigue; powerful and seedy, with its mobs and millionaires—this is the period when Hitler was beginning his move to power. The Berlin Stories is inhabited by a wealth of characters: the unforgettable Sally Bowles, whose misadventures in the demimonde were popularized on the American stage and screen by Julie Harris in I Am A Camera and Liza Minnelli in Cabaret; Mr. Norris, the improbable old debauchee mysteriously caught between the Nazis and the Communists; plump Fräulein Schroeder, who thinks an operation to reduce the scale of her Büste might relieve her heart palpitations; and the distinguished and doomed Jewish family, the Landauers.

MARRIAGE EQUALITY IN MARYLAND VAULTS FORWARD WITH HOUSE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE'S PASSAGE OF CIVIL MARRIAGE EQUALITY BILL
Friday afternoon, after careful consideration, the House Judiciary Committee voted 12-10 in favor of sending Senate Bill 116 – the Civil Marriage Protection Act – for consideration by the full House of Delegates. This is an exciting step that adds even more momentum behind marriage equality in the state of Maryland.
Visit the Equality Maryland site today and tell your delegate how important marriage equality is!

Equality Maryland are currently working to advance the Gender Identity Anti-Discrimination Act in the 2011 Maryland legislative session. This bill HB 235, introduced in the House by Delegate Joseline Pena-Melnyk and Delegate Ariana Kelly, would prohibit discrimination in the areas of employment, housing, and credit. Anti-discrimination protections would exist only as defined in the current law.

To make these and future events successful, it is important that we work together — we all stand to benefit from this so hopefully we can pique your interest and gain your support.
The Lodge Kickball Tournament & Fundraiser
Because of scheduling, the tournament will take place on a Sunday and the Fundraiser will take place two weeks after the kickball tournament to allow ample time for preparation and promotion/advertising. Dawn Mills has helped us secure Western Heights Middle School field for the tournament — however, we need to set a date to reserve the field. Dawn is the head coach for the Hagerstown Special Olympics and is seeking some program funding help — so please keep her organization in mind when choosing who you want to support with donations. For those of us who don’t know about the Hagerstown Special Olympics, Dawn will be providing an information packet.
Participants: Local gay, gay oriented or gay owned businesses and non-profits: Included here are: A.R.E, Cafe Izmir, Community Free Clinic — Hagerstown, Dash Time Graphics, Georgia Boys, GG’s, The Mariner, New Light Metropolitan Community Church, Rainbow Connection and Veritas United Church of Christ and The Lodge. Please excuse us if we’ve forgotten anyone —it’s no excuse, but we’re “new” to the area. So help us by forwarding this invite to any other group you feel should be included.
Charity of Choice: All participants must elect a charity of choice before game day. Funds support the winner’s charity.
The Incentive: Winners get to go back to their establishment, or establishment of choice to celebrate. Loosing teams are all required to go back to that bar to support them by buying at least one drink. But that’s not all, there’s also the fundraiser event where the winning team gets to make some sales.
The Fundraising Event is to be held at the winning team’s establishment, or establishment of choice on a Sunday — two weeks after the kickball tournament to allow ample time for preparation and promoting/advertising. Participating teams must help promote this event and support it by attending. Event will have a $10 door cover, hold a 50/50 ticket, provide some light fare and hold a live auction and/or drag show (or both depending on what the winning team prefers). The winner will organize with support of the other participants and their charity of choice.
The Tournament:
Teams: Minimum 8 people, 12 Maximum. 50% of the team must be staff, the remaining should be patrons/members. In an effort to give this event a spin, we are hoping that everyone would be interested in making it a requirement to have one drag queen dressed in drag in each of the teams. We realize that some of you might not have the type of clientele that would be a good fit for this event, so we would help everyone make sure they have a complete team. We’re hoping to get at least 4 teams.
- Held at Western Heights Middle School
- Game Date: TBD by the collective/participating business heads.
- Game Length: Two 45 min games
- Game Time, TBD by the collective/participating business heads.
- Rules, TBD by the collective/participating business heads.
- Two games, up to four at once and winning teams play each other for championship — TBD based on number of teams.
This is our first time organizing an event, so if you have any suggestion, or feedback please email or give us a call.
